Easter Traditions and Natural Crafts Delight Families at Harmony Woods

Families gathered under budding trees and spring sunshine at Harmony Woods this Easter Holiday as dozens of young “Eggsplorers” take part in a morning of blended joyful tradition, hands-on creativity, and the beauty of the natural world.

The much-anticipated Traditional Easter Egg Decorating Workshop led by local artist Jolanta Rolt, who introduced participants to a centuries-old Lithuanian Easter craft. Using native spring flowers, fresh leaves, and foraged plants from the woodland itself, children carefully arranged delicate patterns onto their eggs. The eggs were then wrapped in onion skins and gently boiled in a rich, natural dye made from red cabbage. The result? Stunning, marbled designs in shades of deep purple, green, and gold—each one unique, and entirely made from natural materials.

"The process is all about patience and creativity," Jolanta explained. "These methods have been passed down through generations in Lithuania, and, as a tradition the British people have lost over the years, it’s so special to see them embraced here in Harmony Woods."

While the eggs simmered to perfection, the excitement continued with a chocolate-filled Easter Egg Hunt, led by local favourites Matt, Natalia, and Hebe. Squeals of delight echoed through the trees as children raced to uncover hidden treats nestled among logs, leaves, and tree roots.

But the fun didn’t stop there. The trio also led several nature-themed games that kept spirits high and brought smiles to both children and grown-ups alike. From a bunny hop interactive story to woodland ground nesting bird activities, the games offered a playful way to celebrate spring and the great outdoors.

To round off the morning, families gathered to enjoy freshly baked hot cross buns, warming their hands and hearts with a sweet, spiced snack as they admired their finished egg creations.

The event was made possible thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers, who helped guide activities, manage materials, and keep the event running smoothly.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make today so special,” said Wendy Davis, Trustee. “Harmony Woods is all about bringing people together in nature, and today really captured that spirit.”

As the families left, carefully cradling their decorated eggs and nibbling the last of their chocolate finds, the feeling was clear: this was an Easter celebration that honored both tradition and togetherness—and created memories that will last well beyond the holiday.
