Ecology INTERN 2025
ENQUIRIES FOR THIS POST ARE NOW BEING SOUGHT.
IF YOU ARE A RECENT GRADUATE OR SOON-TO-GRADUATE STUDENT AND ARE INTERESTED IN THIS POSITION FOR 2025 (OR 2026), PLEASE GET IN TOUCH. The role can be part-tailored to meet the interests of the successful candidate.
The internship will run for 12 months from January/February 2025, and will give the successful applicant the opportunity to gain valuable experience of ecological surveying, running community engagement and citizen science events, assisting in the development of a youth team, and more.
We welcome applicants who have received, within the last 5 years, a degree or a vocational diploma in a relevant subject (e.g. ecology, biology, environmental science, conservation, land and wildlife management, etc). Experience of surveying and a good knowledge of native wildflowers, birds, butterflies, and other pollinators - or a willingness to learn - is a must.
As our intern, your main area of focus will be on the ecology, wildlife monitoring, and management of our community woodland and calcareous grassland, Harmony Woods. However, you will also have the opportunity to gain experience in other aspects of the charity’s work, and there is scope for you to steer your internship into areas that are of interest to you (e.g. fundraising, PR & publicity, education, event planning, and more).
A love of nature is essential, as is a keen desire to share your environmental passion and knowledge with the local community.
The intern is responsible for running our ‘Nature in Harmony’ programme, which has three aspects:
planning and leading biodiversity surveying (wildflowers, birds, pollinators, butterflies) between April and September and writing a report on the findings
recording the annual growth of elm trees on site
planning and leading community connections to nature and citizen science events over the spring and summer,
being a co-developer for our youth programme
your own mini-project
You’ll be supported by our Trustees and volunteer Management Team, made up of experienced professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, and collaborate with our paid officers - so teamwork and good communication will be vital in this role.
You will get to help to plan and deliver interesting and exciting nature- and arts-based community projects, and you’ll be doing a mixture of desk-based and outdoor work. Be prepared to get stuck in!
This is a part-time role, minimum two days a week, and you will be expected to work some evenings and weekends. This is not a salaried role, but you will receive a stipend of £3000 per year, paid in quarterly instalments, and there may be opportunities to write new projects that can include dedicated funding for you, the applicant, as a project officer.
Please email our current intern katie.sell@andovertrees.org.uk if you would like to find out more.

Gardeners and Growers
We support more than 25 schools in tree planting.
From the outset we have encouraged schools to have their own tree nursery bed for teaching purposes and to connect the children to the wood in advance of them coming to plant, and afterwards.
Some schools are already well-supported in this from their own school communities, but many are not and we are increasingly aware that more help is needed.
We are therefore looking to put together a gardening team, members of which would support one school, or a number of schools, for a couple of hours either regularly or occasionally. The minimum would be 3 times a year but there is scope to do this once or twice a month if you have more time to spare.
All work is done with and to support the teacher or teaching assistant and the pupils and students.
Tasks could include:
Digging over the nursery bed
Adding compost to condition the soil
Planting tree whips
Weeding
Identifying and labelling
Wildflower seed sowing, pricking out, potting up and planting
DBS checks
We currently have funding for DBS checking volunteers and will arrange this for you if you do not already hold a current certificate.
No experience?
If you are not an experienced gardener but are keen to learn and have time to spare, we can team you up with those who are.
