Tim Thornton
I am primarily a potter, based in Nether Wallop, producing both functional and sculptural work; many of my pieces are fired over several days in a wood fired kiln, and I also use wood ash in my glazes. However my initial career was in boat building and design, and relatively recently I rebuilt a 50 year old sailing dinghy, and have done some green woodwork furniture making.
Wood ash, mixed with some sand and some clay, is a natural glaze for ceramics, and I use it often with my pots. The colour, texture and glossiness of the glaze varies with the species of tree the wood came from, the soil it grew in, and the proportions of ash, sand and clay. I will make a series of small vessels, and glaze them with a variety of different ash glaze compositions, to show the variety of glazes that can be achieved, and the colours that the ash brings to the glaze. I may also make some more sculptural forms with surfaces related to the ash tree, which may include imprinting the clay with the bark, or cleaving wood and using the cleaved surfaces. These may incorporate ash wood into their design.
